How to Plan and Achieve Your Goals

So now you have the goal, you need the plan. To do this, look at where you are now and then look at all the things you would need to build the life you are picturing. For instance, you might find that you need a certain amount of money to make your dream of travelling happen.

In that case, you need to look at the options available to you to make that money. Or maybe you want to achieve a certain thing in your career and you realize that in order to get there, there is a certain amount of experience you need to acquire first. How can you acquire said experience?

There are many similar examples of how you might go after a particular goal but the thing to remember in every case is that you need to focus on small steps that are just ahead of you. That might mean the next small promotion. It might mean a small upgrade to your home. It might mean developing any form of small income.

With that in mind, you will break these smaller goals down even further. Now the objective is to look at the most minor possible steps that you need to take on a daily or weekly basis to get there. So if your goal is to have a body like Brad Pitt, then that most minor daily step is simple: diet and exercise.

Look around, find a training plan and a diet that works for you, and then commit to sticking to that every single day without one flaw. Likewise, if your goal is to be a top novelist, then your daily goal will be to write X number of words per day. Make the goals easy to accomplish but ensure they take positive – if small – steps in the right direction.

This is the critical target. This is the primary directive. You’ll imagine that vision and let it motivate you when the times get rough. But you are going to forget anything other than the daily target. Right now, that is all that matters.

To help you visualize this, here is what it basically boils down to:

Dream/Vision (Overarching Goal) > Plan (Stepping Stone Goals) > Daily Target (Daily/Weekly Goal)

Changing Your Thinking

So why is this change in thinking so important? The answer is that focusing too much on a distant goal will make you too detached from what you’re trying to accomplish. For instance, if your only ‘goal’ is to become a novelist, you lack any real structure or plan.

This is going to make it very hard for you to stick to. It’s too easy for you to get lazy, take shortcuts, or even forget all about it. Even if your goal is more specific and time-sensitive – such as losing 15kg in 6 months – you are still too detached from it. Why? Because a) you might still think it’s okay to skip a workout or to cheat on your diet one day and then ‘put off’ the goal.

By the time you have 1 month left and you’re still no lighter, you might give up. Or what if you stick to the plan as much as possible but you still don’t see the results you want? How disheartening is that? So, instead, the goal is the target. You focus just on the one day.

You either succeed or fail. It is entirely down to you. It’s entirely your responsibility and no excuses cut it. But if you keep focusing on the daily targets, you will find that the overarching vision takes care of itself. It’s like building a house brick by brick, or taking a journey step-by-step.

Some Final Tips

Just to help you stick to your path, consider a few pointers.

One: keep your daily targets easy to accomplish. Introduce them slowly. Don’t be in a rush to get anywhere. It is better that you just start to enjoy exercise than letting yourself get burned out or put off.

Two: keep track of the days you succeed and lose. Jerry Seinfeld uses this technique and calls it ‘the chain’.

Every day he does what he sets out to do, he puts a big cross on his calendar. This is rewarding and addictive in and of itself, and his desire to ‘not break the chain’ is reportedly enough to keep him from giving up.

Three: use the most practical and proven methods to get where you want to be. You must believe in your plan.

Why are we willing to go to work every day but not work on a plan we enjoy and that could make us more prosperous? Simple: because when we go to work, we definitely get paid. You need a similar plan. Something that will help you get where you need to be, at least in your mind.

And finally, don’t get disheartened if you miss one day. The aim is not to, of course. But if you slip up, go easy on yourself and just jump straight back on that horse!

1. Journaling

2. Walking in the park

3. soothing activities (e.g., massages, bath

4. relaxation

5. getting adequate sleep (or as much as possible!)

6. spending time with friends and family

7. making time for pleasurable activities (what do YOU like to do?)


One aspect of self-care is learning to say no when you are tired, exhausted, or not feeling well. 

How many can only go to bed once the kitchen is cleaned up spotless? Let me ask you a question. Is God more concerned about the kitchen being perfect, or are you taking care of the temple of God - You?

I believe the Lord, when we are exhausted wants us to rest and take care of ourselves. 

Isaiah 40:30-31 says:

“Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” – Isaiah‬ ‭40:30-31‬ ‭ESV‬‬ ðŸ’“

If you’re tired today, I want you to know it is okay. You are not a failure. God did not make you bulldoze your way through life nonstop.


God expects you to get tired. He’s planned for you to get weary because He knows you are human.👸


So what are we supposed to do when we get tired?


The scripture tells us to wait on God; when we do, He will renew our strength. God knows we have our limits, but He doesn’t. God knows we can’t do it all, but He can. God knows we’ll get tired, weary, and faint, but He won’t.


Give yourself permission to rest. Why will the dirt or mess still be there tomorrow? You can rest and take care of it tomorrow. 💇


If in the middle of the day, sit down and close your eyes for about 10 minutes. You will be renewed. Think how the Lord is going to renew your strength. 


Saying no is a radical form of self-care because it helps you prioritize your well-being over your obligations and relationships. Of course, there are deadlines to meet, conversations to have, and things to check off your to-do list. Everything can seem pressing and urgent, but boundaries help us prioritize what we need to do right now versus what we can do later when we’re less stressed, more energetic, and generally well.

If you’re overwhelmed by a long workday, it may not be an excellent time to listen to others talk about their problems. When you’re in the mood for a relaxing evening at home, declining an invite for a night on the town is ok by others. Boundaries help keep us connected without becoming enmeshed. In my work as a social worker, here’s what I’ve learned about the word “no” and what saying it, more often than not, has done for me.


Life can be difficult. When circumstances prevent you from spending time with loved ones, you might feel alone for physical affection. Touch is a basic need, so this is absolutely normal. Going without can have a significant impact on your emotional health, such as anxiety, sadness, loneliness, etc.

Big emotions are real, and it’s OK to have them. Unless it causes anxiety. I will share five steps to kick out anxiety to quiet the mind so that you can have peace vs. torment. 

It’s not that emotions are more significant than God’s truth (they aren’t an excuse to sin), but they are normal and need to be processed, especially if you feel overwhelmed.

But have you ever been so emotionally upset and then anxious that you can’t process ANYTHING?!

It’s so essential first to find calm acknowledge our feelings, and hear the truth.

The great news is that Christ can help us manage our feelings in all three ways:

Trust God

When you think about tomorrow or about your future do you find hope or fear and dread?

Gas prices, food prices, your children, etc.?

What do some people dread for tomorrow? Some have had difficult pasts that have become the point of reference for your future and struggle to trust God and His promises. 

How do you change the dread for tomorrow? 

First, look for the door points of negative events that the enemy had the opportunity to come in and join your thinking. The enemy warps the perspective that God is for you.

It could be a home situation where you were blamed, shamed, or criticized a lot. You never knew when it was going to come. Then, you grew up avoiding events and people to stay out of shame or criticism. Did it hurt? Did you end up worrying about failure on a daily basis driven to be perfect in every situation? You are set up for a constant state of alertness in dread or anxiety about future situations. That's bondage!

What do you do? 

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. Matthew 6:34 KJV

Bottom line! It's more than a positive confession or declaration of what we want. It’s about a heart issue. Who do we choose to really believe today? Recognize when fear is speaking to you and cast it down since it exhausts itself against the truth of God's Word - 2 Corinthians 10:5.
